Mid-Symposium Excursions

One-day excursion planned for Wednesday, 10 September 2008 will provide the following choices:

1. The Neretva River delta (http://www.neretva.info) is an area of vast marshland abundant in flora and fauna sheltering hundreds of species. The whole zone is well protected from human impact and functions as an important wet habitat (wetland, Ramsar site) for many plants and animals. Cruise in a small boats – “trupice” – through the canals to enjoy the beauty and variety of the delta. There is an ornithological reserve at the settlements of Vid, Prud and Orepak at which birds stay during the winter while the south-eastern part of the Neretva delta is a spawning area for many fish species. Visit the Ornitological Collection and Museum Narona (http://www.vid.hr/prijevodi/narona-engleski.htm) housing exhibits from the Roman Empire.


2. Town of Ston, Bay of Mali Ston and Trsteno Arboretum. Visit the historical town of Ston (http://www.ston.hr) with the longest fortifications in Europe and salt works dating back from 15th century. Bay of Mali Ston is nature protected site with high biological productivity, famous for its mussels and oysters beds. Trsteno is the oldest renaissance garden in Dalmatia (1502) and today the only Arboretum (http://mahazu.hazu.hr/ENG/arboretum.html) on the Croatian coast.


3. Republic of Montenegro - provides incomparable natural beauties and abundance of historical sites. Visit picturesque Bay of Boka Kotorska and its hinterland. Post-Symposium Excursions
Two 5-days-long post-Symposium excursions are proposed:

4. UNESCO`s Heritage and National Parks of Croatia (5 days, 4 nights)
13.09. Dubrovnik - Split
Morning departure for Split, driving along the Adriatic Coast and the Neretva River Delta. Sightseeing tour of Split covering the Diocletian’s Palace on UNESCO`s List of the World Cultural Heritage with Peristyle, Jupiter’s Temple and the Cathedral. Dinner and overnight in Split.
14.09. Split – Excursion to Sibenik & Krka River National Park
Departure for Sibenik where we visit the Cathedral of St Jacob, the masterpiece of Renaissance architecture classified the UNESCO`s Cultural Heritage. Drive to the Krka River National Park and touring of the waterfalls. Return to Split, dinner and overnight.
15.09. Split – Plitvice Lakes National Park
Morning drive to Plitvice Lakes National Park included in 1979 on the UNESCO`s List of the World Natural Heritage.Touring of the Low and Upper lakes, each at the different level, joined in a series of cascading waterfalls of a rare and unique beauty. Dinner and overnight in Plitvice.
16.09. Plitvice – Trilj – Dubrovnik
Morning departure for Dubrovnik via Trilj, driving along the Cetina River Valley.
Dinner and overnight in Dubrovnik.
17.09. Dubrovnik
Breakfast, end of tour services.

5. Roman Heritage of Dalmatia (5 days, 4 nights)

13.09. Dubrovnik – Narona - Makarska - Split
Morning departure for Metkovic and Vid, the ancient settlement of Narona.Visit to its archeological park including Roman Forum with mosaics and the Archeological Museum built on the site of the Temple of August presenting 15 sculptures of the emperor, family members and Roman deities. Continuation to Makarska for a visit to Franciscan Monastery housing the Malacological Museum. We proceed to Split for dinner and overnight.
14.09. Split – Excursion to Trogir and Salona
Sightseeing tour of Split including the Diocletian’s Palace listed as UNESCO`s World Cultural Heritage with the Peristyle, Jupiter’s Temple and the Cathedral. Departure for Trogir ,visit to St Lawrence Cathedral well known for its Romanesque Portal .Continuation to ancient Salona, the seat of the Roman province of Dalmatia. Visit to its Archeological Park , touring of the Porta Caesarea, the Forum, baths and city necropolis with sarcophagus. Return to Split for overnight.
15.09. Split – Vela Luka – Korcula
At 10:00 am we embark ferry to Vela Luka, on the island of Korcula .Covered with dense and dark pine forest it was named Korkyra Melaine (Black Korcula) by Greeks who settled here in the III century B.C.
Arrival to Vela Luka at 13:00 h , drive across the island to the city of Korcula, jewel of the medieval architecture. Sightseeing tour including the Cathedral of St Mark with its Treasury and the Museum of Icons, Town Loggia and picturesque squares as well as the family house of Marco Polo, the famous world traveller.Dinner and overnight in Korcula.
16.09. Korcula - Trsteno – Dubrovnik
Breakfast, ferry ride to Orebic followed by drive across the Peljesac Peninsula to Dubrovnik. We stop enroute in Trsteno where we visit its Arboretum with luxuriant subtropical vegetation of magnolia, black bamboo, camphor and eucalyptus trees. We tour the 15th century summer residence of the Gucetic patrician family, surrounded by the beautiful Renaissance garden with the fountain of Neptune. Dinner and overnight in Dubrovnik.
17.09. Dubrovnik - Departure
Breakfast, end of tour services.
